Mission Statement
Reprise is a library of music, stories, and other creations which seeks to grow and adapt to the needs of creatives and anyone else who resonates with the idea of reimagining what we view as “broken.”
Vision Statement
Reprise is a project which seeks to reimagine how we view things that are “broken” in the music industry- both the instruments and musicians alike. I see Reprise as a library, a collection ranging from samples created by broken instruments, to stories, research, and interviews on these themes, and, hopefully, submissions from anyone who resonates with the Reprise mission.
A beautiful example of a connection between person and instrument, as well as music and ecology is Ryuichi Sakamoto and the tsunami piano, a huge inspiration for this project. While taking a writing course on disability, I was inspired to write more about this story, and these themes, and realized how important it can be to write and share stories, especially on the kinds of topics that are usually shied away from.
I want to create a space for broken or discarded instruments, instruments that either cannot be repaired due to lack of resources and money, or are looked down upon because they are not of better quality, or which are beyond repair. I want to juxtapose historical accounts of musicians with modern voices, or others history may have forgotten. I want to highlight both the beauty and the pain that can come from music, from writing, from storytelling in whatever form people may choose. I want to open the conversation about the chase for “perfection,” in art, in music, or life in general, which often promotes exclusionary practices, and overlooks the strengths in acknowledging that nothing is truly perfect.
Above all, I want Reprise to continue to grow and adapt as more samples are created, more stories inspire, and more partnerships, collaborators, artists, musicians, or storytellers interact with the site.
